Key Considerations for the Reserve

This reserve is part of the State Heritage Register Item 01823 – Wollongong Harbour Precinct and is also heritage listed in the Wollongong LEP 2009 separately as Smith’s Hill Fort. The Smith's Hill Battery was constructed 1892-93 as a three-gun emplacement. In 1988, the site was excavated and the fort and the guns and their mountings were restored. Both heritage listings and the Heritage Act 1977 protect the site. Fortifications and gun emplacements are in need of specialist restoration work in line with State Heritage management recommendations.
