Location
The foreshore along Cliff Road, Wollongong

Proposed Community Land Category Mix

  • Park
  • General Community Use
  • Area of Cultural Significance

Crown Reserve Purpose

  • Baths
  • Public Recreation

Initial Category under the CLM Act
Park

Key Considerations for the Reserve
Despite the name, this reserve does not include the North Beach Surf Life Saving Club Building. The reserve was home to an earlier surf club building that existed before the 1930s.

The reserve is part of the Blue Mile. It does include all or part of:

  • North Beach
  • the North Beach Kiosk
  • Bather’s Pavilion
  • the Continental Swimming Pool Pavilion
  • The Tramway Shared path and seawall

The North Beach Kiosk, the North Beach or Bather’s Pavilion, and Railway cuttings and embankment are listed heritage items in the Wollongong 2009 LEP and they are part of a State Heritage Register Item – the North Beach Precinct. There are many interpretive elements explaining the history of this significant reserve. Find more information at www.environment.nsw.gov.au/heritageapp/ViewHeritageItemDetails.aspx?ID=5052983

During a site visit on 14 May 2019 the area was packed with activity.

The reserve is not declared to be ‘Critical Habitat’ or land directly affected by a Recovery Plan. However, the following threatened fauna may be present; Campbell albatross, Wandering albatross, Black browed albatross, Flame robin, Wedge-tailed shearwater. It is also included in the Coastal Management State Environmental Planning Policy.
