What type of bike parking will be installed?

All the racks will be made of stainless steel. Some will be hoop rails like this:

Image shows a drawing of a metal, U-shaped rail attached to the ground with a bike behind it

Others will be post rails, like this: Image shows a drawing of a metal pole with a metal ring on it and a bike behind it

The plans detail which locations will have hoop rails and which will have post rails.

A bike parking sign that meets Austroads guidelines will also be installed nearby.

How did you decide where the bike parking would go?

These sites were chosen following a review of community requests and feedback received during the development of the Cycling Strategy 2030. They are also in busy areas, such as near shops, beaches, playgrounds and public transport.

Will the bike parking block access to parking, buses or pathways?

While designing these plans, we considered how the bike parking might impact car parking spaces, public transport and access, including for wheelchair users. The design and installation of bike parking facilities in NSW must follow the regulations in Austroads – Bicycle Parking Facilities: Guidelines for Design and Installation and Australian Standard AS2890.3 (2015) Compliant Bicycle Parking, which includes consideration of these types of potential impacts. While we have followed these guidelines, there may still be some impacts that we’re not aware of yet, which is why we’re sharing the plans with the community. It’s an opportunity for you to let us know if anything needs to be changed or adjusted in the design before we install the parking.

Why do we need bike parking?

Council is committed to developing our city as a place that balances the needs of people who cycle and want to cycle, returning cyclists and budding cyclists. In recent years, we’ve expanded and upgraded 27km of our cycling and shared path network.

As we developed the Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030, the community told us one of their priorities for cycling is bike parking and nominated potential bike parking sites.

Bike parking and storage along our cycling network is central to encouraging community participation in cycling. If there’s somewhere for people to park their bikes at the places they need to go, it will encourage more people to ride more often.

Having bike parking conveniently located at bus stops encourages more people to ride and use public transport to get around, instead of using cars.

Can I nominate to have bike parking installed in other locations?

The locations we’ve chosen are in areas the community told us were most important to start with. There will be more opportunities to come in future years, where more bike parking will be installed in other locations. If you would like to suggest a location, please write to Council’s Traffic and Transport team at council@wollongong.nsw.gov.au or send a letter to Locked Bag 8821, Wollongong DC NSW 2500.

How will my feedback be used?

At the end of the engagement period, all feedback is read and considered. Council’s Traffic & Transport team will use this feedback to make changes to the design plans if needed.
