Consultation has concluded

We’re updating the Riparian Corridor Management Strategy for the West Dapto Urban Release Area (WDURA). This strategy guides how waterways and surrounding land (riparian corridors) are managed and protected as development continues in the area.

The existing strategy was developed in 2004, and with significant urban growth, environmental changes, and new best practices, it is now being reviewed and updated for the West Dapto Urban Release Area.

These updates may affect how waterways on or near people's properties are classified and managed. We want to make sure the strategy reflects practical and balanced outcomes that support residents, landowners, and the environment.

This review will:

✔ Update watercourse mapping and riparian buffer classifications.

✔ Clarify landowner responsibilities in managing riparian areas.

✔ Improve guidelines to help balance property management with waterway protection.

✔ Address challenges in applying the 2004 strategy and identify possible solutions.

Will this effect a primary producer?

Jay Knick asked 26 days ago

Generally, the proposed Riparian Corridor Management Strategy would apply to land where new urban development is proposed adjacent to waterways.

Council policy currently limits certain development within Riparian Corridors. The policy is applied via Chapter E23: Riparian Land Management of Wollongong Development Control Plan, 2009 (DCP). Existing riparian corridor controls in the DCP apply to development requiring development consent.

Primary production activities would not be affected by the proposed Strategy where the activities are permitted either as historical land use, or with development consent, according to the requirements within the Wollongong Local Environmental Plan 2009, the Local Land Services Act 2013 and other laws and policies that control land use in NSW.

The Strategy will provide a framework to clearly identify and classify riparian corridors in the West Dapto Release Area. The Strategy will also provide guidance on the latest riparian corridor management approaches that could bring benefits to primary producers, such as:

    • Reducing erosion, by keeping soil on your land, not washing away into creeks.
    • Improving water quality and creating healthier waterways, which can benefit livestock and reduce pollution downstream.
    • Protecting biodiversity, which can support things like pollination and pest control.
    • Providing clearer guidance, so you know what’s expected near waterways when planning farm works or developments.

The strategy is still being developed, and Council is seeking feedback to help shape it. If you're a primary producer and you think the changes might affect you, we encourage you to have a look at the draft documents and let us know your views. Your input will help make sure the strategy is practical and supports both farming and waterway health.

Thanks for your enquiry. It has been sent to our Assets team for investigation. Wollongong City Council is responsible for building, operating and maintaining over $7 billion worth of infrastructure assets that support a variety of services for our community. This includes more than 685 km of stormwater pipes and riparian assets. Pending the investigation, Council may schedule works to repair the drain, depending on its current condition and the availability of Council funding and resources.
