Consultation has concluded
In 2016 ‘A City for People’, our vision for Wollongong City Centre was endorsed. A key recommendation was to test the planning policy to ensure it aligned with delivering the City Centre vision – a City Centre that is people-orientated, sustainable and liveable.
We undertook detailed urban design, economic and planning analysis to test the planning controls. This work came together in the draft Wollongong City Centre Urban Design Framework. We took this framework to the community for feedback.

The UDF was used to prepare the draft Wollongong City Centre Planning Strategy and detailed policy recommendations.
The draft Wollongong City Centre Planning Strategy, Wollongong Local Environmental Plan 2009 (LEP) and Development Control Plan (or DCP) were reported to Council for consideration at the meeting on Monday 7 December 2020.
Councillors deferred the project and requested additional studies be completed before we move to the next stage.

A City For People | Wollongong City Centre Planning Review has finished this stageThe draft Wollongong City Centre Planning Strategy, together with associated Draft Planning Proposal and Draft City Centre DCP chapter were reported to Council for consideration on 7 December 2020.
At this meeting, Councillors resolved to defer the project, requesting additional studies to be completed.

The Planning Proposal (LEP) and supporting documentation is submitted to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to seek Strategic Merit. This process is called ‘Seeking Gateway’.

The community are invited to comment on the draft documents via a survey. Feedback received during this period will inform the refinement of the proposed changes to the LEP (Planning Proposal) and DCP.

Final Report to Council

Council decide whether to adopt the Planning Proposal. If it is adopted, it gets sent to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to be made final.

Planning controls updated
this is an upcoming stage for A City For People | Wollongong City Centre Planning ReviewThe LEP controls are made final by Parliamentary Council. The Wollongong LEP and DCP 2009 are updated along with Council’s process.
