What is planned in the construction?

    The project includes:

    • Reconstruction of existing car park pavement
    • Replacement of damaged sections of kerb
    • Construction of new kerb and gutter
    • Construction to formalise the existing entries and exits
    • Relocation of parking for people with a disability to improve access
    • Relocation of the bus shelter on the northern side of the car park
    • Line marking and car park signs
    • Improvements to stormwater drainage
    • Shade tree planting
    • Street furniture

Why inclusion of the Grand Pacific Walk?

The Grand Pacific Walk (GPW) will run from the southern end of the Royal National Park to Lake Illawarra, providing an active transport connection to suburbs in our north with those in our south.

The GPW is a long term project with sections being completed when funding becomes available. As crews will be in Coledale for the reconstruction of the car park we will be able to construct this section of the GPW. The path will be 2.5 to 3 metres wide and designed for shared use.

More information on the GPW can be found on the Council website.

How will the car park be improved?

There will be new pavement, kerb and gutter, wheel stops, speed humps and improved entry and exit.

Parking will be aligned on the east side of the car park facing the beach and there will be better access to the beach and foreshore for people with a disability.

Access to the local school, weekend markets and the camping ground will be improved with the inclusion of the GPW section.

There will be opportunity to widen the existing path to improve access, reduce risk and provide amenity with views along the foreshore.

There will also be opportunity for tree planting along Lawrence Hargrave Drive in line with Council’s Urban Greening Strategy

How will I be affected by the work?

It is possible that construction can commence in the second half of 2020. The works will take approximately12 weeks to complete, depending on weather.

Traffic management of vehicles and pedestrians will be required during the construction process.
