As part of Council’s commitment to improving road safety and transport connectivity, we are proposing new lighting and a new footpath around Coniston Train Station.

Why are we doing this project?

This project is part of Transport for NSW's Transport Integration and Placemaking program to improve access around selected train stations across our city. These improvements are aimed to make your journey to catch the train a safer one.

What is being proposed?

The draft concept designs include:

  • Four new light poles on the eastern side of the station.
  • A new footpath along Gladstone Avenue near the station’s parking area.
  • New wheel stops in the station’s parking bays
  • Supporting kerb ramps and line marking.

Where is this project up to?

We began consultation with the community from August - September 2024 to welcome feedback on our proposed changes to Coniston Train Station. This consultation has now concluded.

Our Transport Team is now working through all that was heard throughout this project. You can still view the draft concept designs for this project and see what we have planned:

How will community feedback be used and what are the next steps?

In the first phase, we were asking for your feedback on our draft concept designs. We’re interested to hear your local knowledge and ideas.

In the second phase, we will check back in with the community to finalise the detailed designs and take any last comments before we start construction.

Construction is planned for 2025/2026 financial year as listed in our Infrastructure Delivery Program(External link).

    About the Project

In Coniston, the community was being asked to share their thoughts on improvements at two locations by the Coniston Train Station. The locations were:

    • Gladston Avenue – New footpath, wheel stops and kerb ramps
    • Pathway between Bridge Street and Miller Street – Lighting improvements

There were 32 submissions made in relation to the proposed works at Gladstone Avenue and Bridge Street / Miller Street. Three submission was made via email. One was made via phone call.

    Results

Question 1: Do you agree that this plan will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in Coniston and lead to better access of the Train Station?Question 2: What do you think about the proposed introduction of a footpath and wheel stops on Gladstone Avenue where the train station parking bay area is currently located?

Question 3: What do you think about the introduction of lighting on the eastern side of the trainline, between Bridge Street and Miller Street?

Question 4: Has the proposed area of works to add a footpath and wheel stops on Gladstone Avenue captured the right number of parking spaces and path upgrades needed at the station?

Question 4.1: As you’ve said ‘no’, tell us why:

Five responses were received by people who disagreed with the number of wheel stops and footpath upgrades. Their responses have been summarised as:

    • additional and better-organised parking spaces is a priority as the current car park fills up early, leading to people parking in undesignated areas.
    • consider adding more spaces and better line marking.
    • the proposed changes are unnecessary, and resources would be better spent on other priorities
    • the current setup is sufficient

Question 5: Would you consider changing your travel habits in the future to include more walking, cycling and/or public transport after seeing these proposed changes around Coniston Train Station?

Question 5.1: As you've said 'no', tell us why:
The feedback in response to the question about changing travel habits around Coniston Train Station highlights several key points:

    • the proposed works are not enough - suggest instead investing in safe crossings rather than just footpaths.
    • the station has issues with accessibility on the southbound side, particularly for those using wheelchairs or who have limited mobility
    • area is already safe and fit for purpose, and additional changes may not be necessary.
    • cycling infrastructure could be improved to separate cyclists from pedestrians.

Question 6: If you have feedback on these proposed changes around Coniston Train Station, please share it here.
The additional feedback regarding path upgrades, lighting, and wheel stops at Coniston Train Station has been summarised under the following broad themes:

    • Safety and surveillance
    • Cycling and walking infrastructure
    • Accessibility
    • Parking and traffic management

If you would like to understand the feedback in more detail, you can read the complete Engagement Report(External link) for this, and the 6 other train stations included in this project.

    Additional improvements

Transport for NSW announced a suite of significant improvements to Coniston Train Station that will occur in conjunction with the proposed works by Council. These include adding new lifts and stairs, accessible parking and toilets. You can read more about this by visiting the project’s page - Coniston Station Upgrade | Transport for NSW(External link).

    Next Steps

Council will now consider all the feedback provided by the community regarding the proposed changes to Coniston Train Station.

All feedback is important and is one factor in the decision-making process for Council. The graphic below shows some of the factors we consider in our decision making:

This project will have another phase of consultation where the community can participate in. the second phase, we will check back in with the community to finalise the detailed designs and take any last comments before we start construction.

All previous participants and the broader community will be notified via the Our Wollongong website.
