As part of Council’s commitment to improving road safety and transport connectivity, we are making improvements around Helensburgh Train Station.,

Why are we doing this project?

This project is part of Transport for NSWs Transport Integration and Placemaking program to improve access around selected train stations across our city. These improvements are aimed to make your journey to catch the train a safer one.

What is being proposed?

Last year we asked the community for feedback on our draft concept designs. The Transport Team have considered all the feedback and prepared a detailed design that has incorporated some of what our community told us.

The detailed design includes:

  • Improvements to the footpath along Wilsons Creek Road.
  • A new pedestrian refuge island at the intersection of Tunnel Road and Parkes Street.

To take a closer look you can view the detailed design.

Thank you to everyone who participated in phase 1 of the engagement with our community on proposed changes around Helensburgh Train Station.

    About the project

The community in Helensburgh was being asked to share their thoughts on proposed footpath improvements along Wilsons Creek Road, and a refuge island on Tunnel Road.

There were 28 submissions made in relation to the proposed works in both Wilsons Creek Road and Tunnel Road.

Question 1: Do you agree that this plan will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists on Tunnel Road and Wilsons Creek Road, and lead to better access of Helensburgh Train Station?

Question 2: What do you think about the proposed improvements to the footpath along Wilsons Creek Road?

Question 3: What do you think about the proposed location of a pedestrian refuge island on Tunnel Road?

If you would like to understand the feedback in more detail, you can read the complete Engagement Report for this, and the 6 other train stations included in this project.

    Additional improvements

Transport for NSW announced on the 11 October 2024 a suite of improvements to several train stations in the Illawarra as part of this program. In addition to the footpath improvements at Helensburgh Station, Transport for NSW will be upgrading the existing bicycle storage and have bicycle racks replaced, as well as adding new lighting. Next Steps

Council will now consider all the feedback provided by the community regarding the proposed changes to Helensburgh Train Station.

All feedback is important and is one factor in the decision-making process for Council. The graphic below shows some of the factors we consider in our decision making:

This project will have another phase of consultation where the community can participate in. the second phase, we will check back in with the community to finalise the detailed designs and take any last comments before we start construction.

All previous participants and the broader community will be notified via the engagement website.
