Addressing pedestrian safety and access

As part of the Corrimal Town Centre Plan consultation, the community told us about their concerns around pedestrian safety and access. A design to address the concerns at the Railway Street/Princes Highway intersection and improve sections of the footpath along the Princes Highway has been developed.

    The design includes:

    -  Narrowing lane widths as a speed reduction measure whilst leaving enough room for buses.

    -  Minor widening of the footpath along the Princes Highway from Railway St to the Commonwealth Bank.

    -  Adjusting the traffic signals and installing new kerb ramps on the northern side of the Princes Highway and Railway Street Intersection.

    -  Lifting the kerb and gutter and rebuilding the footpath to make it flatter.

    -  Reconstructing the existing kerb ramps to make them easier to use.

As part of the Corrimal Town Centre Plan consultation, the community told us about their concerns around pedestrian safety and access. A design to address the concerns at the Railway Street/Princes Hwy intersection and the section of footpath on the western side of the Princes Highway has been developed.

    The design includes:

    -  Narrowing lane widths as a speed reduction measure whilst leaving enough room for buses.

    Other improvements

To improve the function of the area we will:

    -  Install new seats and upgrade bins surrounds.

    -  Replace trees that may be affected when the kerb is lifted.

When can we expect this to happen?

You can expect to see construction begin in the first half of 2020. Business owners and adjacent residents will be notified prior to construction.

    What about flooding?

The raising of the kerb will not have a significant impact on the flood zone in Corrimal.

What about the rest of the street?

The flood affected areas of the Princes Highway north of the Commonwealth Bank need to undergo additional design and assessment to ensure we don’t make things worse for adjacent properties. Our priority is to address safety and access issues where we can, so we took the opportunity to get these works happening in the meantime.
