Why is a crossing proposed at this location?
As part of the Corrimal Town Centre Plan consultation, the community told us their concerns around pedestrian safety and access in this area. One of the strategies identified in the Corrimal Town Centre plan is the delivery of a pedestrian-friendly main street, with improved crossing facilities on the Princes Highway. This pedestrian crossing will provide the best balance between vehicle traffic flows and pedestrian safety/movements. Importantly, it will provide a safe crossing facility that will cater for all pedestrians including vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children and mobility-impaired.
What will the crossing look like ?
The crossing will look similar to the one in this photo, with traffic signals used to stop traffic to allow pedestrians to cross. The proposed crossing in Corrimal won’t have a gap near the kerb like that on the left-hand side of this image. We’re also proposing new footpaths and paving both sides of the crossing to match in with the current footpath upgrade works underway
When will the works start and how long will they take?
The civil works are expected to commence late September for approximately 6 weeks with the signal installation to follow on after.
Will parking be affected during the construction of the new crossing?
It is anticipated some parking will be affected during construction to allow the construction works to take place. The construction crew will make every effort to limit and minimise parking disruptions adjacent to the works.
How many parking spaces will be lost when the new crossing is finished?
Four spaces will need to be permanently removed in order to make space for this new pedestrian crossing.
What other improvements has Council made to the Corrimal Town Centre Streetscape?
The initial stages of the Corrimal Town Centre Streetscape Plan focused on improving the function and amenity of the area. In 2019/2020 we developed plans and completed construction to address the concerns at the Railway Street/Princes Highway intersection and improved sections of the footpath along the Princes Highway. These improvements included new signal upgrades and kerb ramps to provide safe pedestrian crossing at the intersection, widening of the footways and improved cross falls along the Princes Hwy, new street trees and provision of street furniture such as seats and bins.
