Why do we have a Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Policy?

We focus on diversity because it's the right thing to do.  So it makes sense to introduce a Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Policy (the Policy).  Specifically, we have developed a Statement of Commitment that will guide decisions on the services we provide for the community and how we’ll shape and support our workplace in the delivery of those services.  We recognise the importance of meeting the diverse needs of our community.  It’s the combination of diversity, inclusion and belonging that will enable the creation of an extraordinary place where diversity is valued, people are included and feel they belong.

What is diversity, inclusion and belonging?

Diversity is recognising our differences such as what we look like, what we can or can’t do, what we know, and our beliefs. Diversity also relates to our age, gender, sexuality, race, marital status, religion, health and ability.

Inclusion is about everyone having equal access and opportunities.

Belonging is when people feel safe, respected and accepted.

    How diverse is Wollongong?

As at the last 2016 ABS Census we know that:

    • The median age is 39 years. Approximately 1 in 5 people were aged 65 and over; while one quarter was under the age of 20.
    • 2.6% identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
    • 78.2% only spoke English at home. The four most common languages other than English spoken at home were Macedonian, Italian, Mandarin and Arabic.
    • 1 in 5 Australians live with disability. 6% of people living in our City had a need for assistance, meaning they need help with their day to day lives due to disability.

Where can I read the Policy?

You can find the draft Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Policy on our engagement website.

How does the Policy affect me?

The Policy provides an overarching approach to diversity, inclusion and belonging. It informs our decisions and the way we work. What you’ll see, hear and feel are the outcomes of us listening and responding to the diverse needs of our community.

How does the Policy fit with other Council plans?

Our Wollongong 2028 Community Strategic Plan is the overarching plan that guides everything we do. The Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Policy sits underneath Our Wollongong 2028 to guide our plans and actions about diversity and inclusion. For example, the Disability Inclusion Action Plan and the Ageing Plan

How can I join the conversation?

Visit our engagement website from 1 July to 5 August 2020 to read the draft Policy and provide your feedback through the feedback form. We want to talk about diversity, inclusion and belonging in our city. We’re asking community members to share their stories of inclusion and belonging through your story

How will my feedback be used?

Your feedback will help us refine this Policy. Stories of diversity, inclusion and belonging will be shared on the engagement website and in the final community engagement report as part of a conversation.

    What happens next?

All feedback will be considered and will inform the final version of the Policy. The updated Policy will then be provided to Council for endorsement later in the year.
