What is a Conservation Management Plan?

Conservation Management Plans guide the use, management and change of state heritage items. They should achieve the best possible conservation of heritage significance within the context of the real-world management circumstances of the item.

What approvals are needed to undertake conservation works?

To undertake the identified Conservation Works Council will need to seek State Government approval from Heritage NSW under the NSW Heritage Act 1977 as the Fortifications are part of a State Heritage Precinct.

When are the conservation works planned?

Funding will need to be sought from Council through the Budget and Implementation Plan process and through State Government grant opportunities to undertake the conservation works recommended in the Conservation Management Plan once the document is adopted by Council and the necessary approvals are obtained.

How will my feedback be used?

The project team will review all the feedback we heard from the community during the engagement period.

All feedback is important and is one factor in the decision-making process for Council. The graphic below shows some of the factors we consider in our decision making:

A circular diagram showing the factors that influence a decision. In the centre is the word "Decision", surrounded by nine labelled bubbles: Your feedback, Cost, Legislation, Council policies, Expert or technical advice, Social factors, Economic impact, Environmental impact, and Governance.

    What happens next?

The project team will consider all feedback received and draft Flagstaff Hill and Smiths Hills Forts Conservation Management Plan may be varied as necessary.

A report will be prepared for Council detailing what was heard and present recommendations on final amendments.

Council will consider this report and provide a resolution on how to proceed.

All those that have given feedback will be notified of the date of the Council meeting and how to view the relevant documents.
