Consultation has concluded

As part of our commitment to improve cycling links throughout Wollongong, we are proposing to build a 2.5m wide shared user path in Austinmer. It will run alongside the coastal roads from Herah’s Beach to Headlands Hotel.

This proposed section of the Grand Pacific Walk will make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians to ride and walk in Austinmer. These upgrades are an important connecting link in the Wollongong cycling network being developed as part of the Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030.

This project is funded by the NSW Government under the Get NSW Active Program 2022/23.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this engagement by providing comments on the Grand Pacific Walk, Austinmer proposed shared path plans.

What we heard from the community

Community response was enthusiastic about the connectivity of the proposed shared path, the much-needed upgrade to the current path and the positive effects on the local community’s health, safety and increased accessibility to Wollongong

However, submissions highlighted the community’s concerns on the safety of the shared paths, specifically the conflict between cyclists, pedestrians, residents and traffic. Additional concerns included the plan’s effect on the environment, parking and traffic.

A number of submissions detailed possible alternate plans for the proposed shared path, specifically requesting the path continue along Lawrence Hargrave Drive as an alternate to the Little Austinmer Lane route.

Council received multiple submissions from Little Austinmer Lane residents concerned about how the shared path and how it’s construction would affect their properties, amenities and safety. Council reassured residents that were concerned about losing access from

Glastonbury Gardens to Little Austinmer Beach that access would remain.
