Council adopts Collins Creek Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan

Council adopted the Collins Creek Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan at its meeting on 15 September 2025. You can read the business paper and minutes for more information.

The updated study looks at flood risks to people, homes, infrastructure and public assets in the Collins Creek catchment. The plan outlines how these risks will be managed, taking into account current rainfall and climate data.

Proposed mitigation actions include upgrades to culverts and stormwater systems, construction of a detention basin, and vegetation management to improve flood flow. Planning changes, education campaigns, and encouraging households and businesses to develop flood plans are also part of the approach. Property-level measures such as voluntary house raising or purchase in high-risk areas are included, along with exploration of early warning systems.

Community feedback received during the exhibition period helped shape the final version of the plan. Adoption of the plan also allows Council to seek funding from state and federal governments to carry out priority actions.

The associated flood data will be fed into the New South Wales Flood Data Portal to support better understanding of flood behaviour, flood risk and more informed decision-making for the catchment.
