What works are planned along Cordeaux Road?

Planned works include bridge improvements, pathways, retaining walls and road works.

    The proposed works include:

    • Structural repairs to Bushells Hill Bridge, Mt Kembla.
    • The design and construction of a replacement bridge on Cordeaux Road, west of William James Drive which will include road realignment.
    • Construction of a new shared path linking the existing path network at Booreea Boulevard, Cordeaux Heights, to the Mount Kembla village including the Mount Kembla Mine Memorial Pathway.
    • Renewal of two ageing timber retaining walls at Mt Kembla Public School and 100m west of the school as part of the share path construction.
    • Road resurfacing of some areas between Booreea Boulevard to Bushells Hill Bridge.

Why are these works being proposed?

The replacement of the bridge west of William James Drive and repair to the Bushells Hill Bridge is essential work to ensure the bridges can continue to operate safely. The shared path link will improve pedestrian, cyclist and road safety and general accessibility. We will also be realigning the road west of William James Drive to improve visibility. Road resurfacing is part of our general maintenance program.

When will the works start and how long will it take?

The structural repairs to Bushells Bridge will be completed over the next few weeks.

Works are due to start on the replacement bridge over American Creek on Cordeaux Road near William James Drive in early June. Clearing works will commence at this site from the end of May/early June. Pre-construction works currently underway include relocation of a gas service by the service provider, Jemena.

The construction of the Mount Kembla shared path is expected to start later this year. The renewal of the timber retaining walls at Mt Kembla Public School will be done as part of these works. It is anticipated that Mt Keira Road will be reopened prior to the commencement of the shared path works. Further details on this stage of the project will be made available closer to the commencement of construction.

This is a complex and challenging project with many stages. We can expect the overall project to take up to two years to complete. The last stage is expected to finish by the end of 2015. Council is working to keep the disruption to the community to a minimum.

What impact will these works have on the community?

Due to site limitations, only one lane of the bridge and both approaches will be open for the duration of the replacement bridge construction works at William James Drive. Traffic lights will be used for traffic control at this site. Allowing for wet weather and other delays, it is expected that the traffic restrictions will be in place for 12 months.

When the shared path construction works begin later this year, there will be another section of Cordeaux Road reduced to one lane traffic. Traffic control will be located at relevant sections of the site and will move with the construction as it progresses. Traffic restrictions for this part of the project will be in place until late 2015.

The emergency services will be notified of the change to traffic conditions.

We have engaged with key agencies such as State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service to get their input into the timing of the project.

How can I have my say?

You can have your say in the following ways:

    What happens next?

Council will review feedback received from the community and consider it in the finalisation of plans.

Council will keep you up-to-date throughout the project via the Council website www.wollongong.nsw.gov.au and through direct communication.
