Changes to the existing pedestrian refuge on Railway Parade were undertaken for the UCI event as this location was part of the cycling race routes. Existing concrete blisters were removed, and temporary controls installed to allow removal on race days for improved rider safety near the intersection with Park Road.
Permanent pedestrian safety and access improvements have now been planned as a UCI Legacy project.
We are proposing a raised crossing in line with Transport for NSW guidelines. These crossings provide pedestrian priority and greater visibility of pedestrians from approaching vehicles.
What are the proposed improvements?
In designing the improvements, we have considered the safety and convenience of all road users and pedestrians. The improvements include:
retaining left and right hand turns into and out of Railway Parade
new street lighting upgrade at the crossing point
a concrete pathway linking to the pedestrian refuge on Railway Parade
adding new signs and line marking to indicate the "no stopping zones" on the southern approach to the crossing.
There will be no loss of on street parking and construction works will be undertaken in 2023/24.
