Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Evening Economy for the City Centre?
An Evening Economy includes everything that happens in the city centre between 5pm and midnight from cafes,
restaurants, small bars, shopping, museums, art galleries, sporting events, theatre, music, markets, and other activities. It also brings economic, social and cultural benefits to the city.
Why does Wollongong City Council want to introduce an Evening Economy Policy?
Our City Centre has started to see a change in the diversity of activities. To support an evening economy, Council is developing an Evening Economy Policy that will help create a more vibrant, diverse and safe City Centre between 5pm and midnight. Council would like to involve the community including businesses, retailers, cultural organisations and government agencies to deliver an inclusive approach to the evening economy.
The Policy will be a strategic document that outlines the vision for the City Centre’s evening economy to inform future planning, governance and infrastructure decisions. An Evening Economy Action Plan will also be developed which will provide details on how the Policy will be put into action.
How will the Policy be developed?
Your ideas and suggestions, together with existing research, will be used to develop a draft City Centre Evening Economy Policy. The outcomes of the Live Music Taskforce and the new Cultural Plan will also be used to feed into the draft Policy.
What is the timeframe?
The draft Policy will be presented to Council in October 2013 and then placed on public exhibition. While on exhibition you will have another chance to provide feedback which will be used to develop the final policy. Once Council has endorsed the final policy, implementation will commence. This is expected in early 2014.
