Update

We’ve been trialling kerbside electric vehicle (EV) chargers at five locations across Wollongong. These chargers are designed to make EV charging more accessible, especially for residents without off-street parking. Council is reviewing the pilot, and we’d love to hear what you think as part of the evaluation. Whether you’ve used the chargers or just have thoughts on the idea, your feedback will help us decide what happens next.

Pilot Process

The community have told us how important addressing climate change is to them. As part of our commitment to creating a healthy community in a liveable city, we’re working with Endeavor Energy and EVX Australia to pilot kerbside Electric Vehicles (EV) charging sites. A pilot allows us to temporarily try out having chargers in the proposed locations. We can then assess what works, or what doesn’t, before deciding if they should be made permanent and if we provide more in other locations.

Why are we piloting EV charging points?

EVs provide many benefits to the community including:

  • Reduced air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Reduced fuel costs
  • Lower maintenance costs, and
  • Less noise.
  • A cleaner, quieter and more sustainable road network.

While many EV owners have a home charging point, some households in higher-density suburbs and apartment owners don’t have a garage where a charger could be installed. This pilot will allow EV owners who don’t have access to off-street parking to charge their vehicles.

We’re excited to partner with Endeavor Energy and EVX Australia on this pilot to use streetside power poles to support EV charging. EVX Australia will provide and manage the EV chargers, Endeavour Energy will supply renewable power to the network, and we’ll dedicate street parking spaces.

Locations across the local government area have been assessed to determine which sites may be suitable for the pilot. The recommended sites are based on:

  • Accessibility
  • Suitability for installation of EV charging equipment, and
  • Locations the community would likely use them.

The pilot locations are:

Following community engagement in September 2025, we are now seeking to install new kerbside electric vehicle charging infrastructure (EVCI) in the following areas:

    CBD Funding Zone

    City-Wide Proposed Sites

Letters will be sent to nearby residents providing more information and maps. These residents will be given the opportunity to provide feedback. The due date for feedback is 19 December 2025. All community comments will be considered before we make a submission to the Wollongong Local Transport Forum in February 2026.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Kerbside Electric Vehicle Charging Points Pilot survey. This survey will help Council plan for future instalments for Kerbside Electric Vehicle Charging Points within our LGA.

We recently checked in with the community about the Kerbside Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Points Pilot, which has been running for almost 12 months. Through an online survey and email submissions, we heard from 64 participants.

    Key insights:

    • Support for expansion: Most respondents agreed the pilot helps reduce barriers to EV ownership and want to see more chargers installed.
    • Usage patterns: While many hadn’t used the chargers, regular users highlighted locations like Austinmer Tennis Courts, Railway Parade (Thirroul), and Victoria Street (Wollongong) as convenient.
    • Challenges raised: Parking limitations, charger compatibility, app usability, and the need to bring your own cable were common concerns.
    • Suggestions: Dynamic pricing, extended parking allowances for EVs while charging, and new locations in Northern Illawarra to support commuters.
