Consultation has concluded

The Port Kembla Community Centre is a well-loved community asset. We are excited to be moving forwards on plans to refurbish the Centre. This space is an important hub for the local community and there are many services and programs that run out of the space.

Throughout the refurbishment process we are working closely with Our Community Project Inc who manage the centre and run a range of activities and services on-site to collate their feedback on the proposed updates. We’re also seeking comments from the community including other stakeholders who use the space.

While the works are underway, we will work closely with Our Community Project to keep regular hirers, hall visitors and the local community updated to minimise disruption.

What is planning in Stage 2?

Stage 1 of the refurbishment was completed in 2021.

Plans for Stage 2 of the refurbishment includes:

  • New community office
  • Relocation of toilets
  • Compliant accessible toilet
  • Hall roof replacement
  • Landscaping of site, upgrade of forecourt and installation of compliant access paths

Timeframe for Stage 2 refurbishments:

  • We will be lodging a DA for these essential works by the end of 2023.
  • Construction 2025/26 and 2026/27
  • The budget for this stage of the works is $1.8M.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this engagement by providing comments on the proposed refurbishment design.

What we heard from the community

Keeping the wisteria and repairing the existing structure was important to the community.

The existing chessboard should be kept, and the design should include storage for the chess pieces.

The central atrium in the design for the community hall was considered too large. It was suggested the design be modified and the size of atrium be reduced.

More seating, including tables and chairs should be added to the design. The suggested circular seating was not popular.

Trees featured in the comments, with one asking to remove the Dracaena palm and to consider other species instead of the suggested small deciduous tree Lagerstroemia.

Other suggestions included adding fairy lights to trees and adding a bubbler to the eastern side of the site.

One submission said it's great that the Community Centre itself is getting an exciting upgrade.
