People sitting, standing, walking and relaxing in proposed village square in Wiseman Park.

We're making plans for upgrades in Gwynneville, including Wiseman Park, Gipps Road, Throsby Drive and Foley Street. The proposed plans follow on from the Keiraville - Gwynneville Access and Movement Study and the Fairy Creek Corridor Master Plan, finalised based on previous community engagement prior to, and including, 2017-2020. The Gwynneville Accces and Movement Map shows how these plans are coming together to connect Gwynneville to West Wollongong, the CBD and other nearby areas.

Wiseman Park and Gipps Road Upgrades

Check out the draft plans here

The draft Wiseman Park and Gipps Upgrade Plan includes new pathways, picnic furniture and a village square in Wiseman Park, along with a new raised pedestrian crossing on Gipps Rd and a shared user path (for walkers and riders) between the Foley St traffic lights and the Vickery St roundabout.

The upgrades will make it safer for people to cross Gipps Rd, provide more spaces for people to sit and relax in the area and make it easier and more accessible for people to walk and ride there. There’ll be better connections to amenities, the playground, exercise equipment and the school crossing on Vickery St, and the heritage memorial will be refurbished and moved to a more prominent position.

There will be some changes to car parking so the raised pedestrian crossing can be added to help people cross Gipps Rd safely. Importantly, the number of car parking spots available on Gipps Rd, between Vickery St and Foley St, will stay the same as it is now.

Throsby Drive Shared User Path

Check out the draft plans here

The draft Throsby Drive Shared User Path will make it easier and safer for walkers and riders to get between Gwynneville and the Wollongong CBD. This path is a key connector in the Wollongong Cycling network, being developed as part of the Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030. The path will run along the southern side of the road, between the roundabouts at Foley St and the Princes Hwy (Flinders St). It will be on the road for some sections and off the road in other sections.

Foley Street Safety Upgrades

Plans have been revised and finalised, following previous community feedback. Check out the News feed below for an update on the Foley Street Safety Upgrades project.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this engagement by providing comments on the proposed plans.

Three separate projects in the Gwynneville area were combined into one engagement process:

    1. Wiseman Park and Gipps Rd Upgrades
    2. Throsby Drive Shared User Path
    3. Foley Street Safety Upgrades.

What we heard from the community

Results were mixed for both the Wiseman Park/Gipps Road upgrades and the Throsby Drive Cycleway and Shared Path project.

Wiseman Park footpath and new paths comments were combined and while some favourable comments were received, the width of the paths were queried, stating ‘shared paths’ should be 2.5 metres wide. Some didn’t see the need for any additional paths.

Share paths along the park frontage and to connect to Foley Street receive some support, however a number of people advocated for ‘separated cycleways’ rather than shared paths.

There was more support for the raised pedestrian crossing to access the village shops, although only five people comments on this element.

Comments about the palm trees in the mall and ‘fake surveys’ were made.

Throsby Drive comments were received on three of the 11 legend items, namely the new concrete shared path, the new on-road cycleway and the new concreted driveway.

The new concrete shared path received some support as it appeared on the plan. Council was congratulated for adding more cycling infrastructure. However, comments were made about shared paths not being the best option on Throsby Drive. Concerns about paths leading up to intersections were made. Others mentioned Throsby Drive didn’t need two traffic lanes in both directions.

The new on-road cycleway also had mixed support with questions raised about cyclists having to dismount at the bridge. It was suggested the existing path on both sides be widened and made into a shared path to keep the bikes off the road.

The new concrete driveways was supported by the one person who commented on this element.

General comments included suggestions to advertise what a shared path means and adding bike signs to the traffic lights at Denison Street. One comment said no one uses the cycleways.

The Quick Poll results for Wiseman Park/Gipps Road were more favourable, than those for Throsby Drive.

    Foley Street Safety Upgrade

In 2021, we sought community feedback on draft plans to make Foley Street safer for drivers and pedestrians. We received community feedback about certain parts of the plans and have used that feedback to update the plans. The revised Foley Street Safety Upgrades Plan is now finalised, and we're planning for works to start on those upgrades in mid-2023. You can see how we've used community feedback to update the plans via the Foley Street Safety Upgrades Engagement Summary.
