Stage 1 of the Wongawilli Access Project aims to ensure Wongawilli has the necessary infrastructure to support its growing population, reduce flood risks and increase safety approaching the rail crossing. It includes improving stormwater management, widening Wongawilli Road, building a shared path on the northern side of the road and landscaping from the Wongawilli mine entrance to the Shone Avenue intersection. It forms part of our West Dapto Access Strategy.

  • Works Update 10 November 2020

This week our two works crews are continuing with drainage installation. They're also preparing the road pavement for December's kerb and gutter installation on the south side of Wongawilli Road.

We've also completed additional works to help during periods of rain and we'll be undertaking further maintenance on the northern swale this weekend.

Due to the recent rain event, the ground is currently too wet near the creek to progress with the second watermain lowering. Work here will recommence as soon as ground conditions are favourable for the watermain installation - hopefully in the coming weeks.

  • Flash flooding clean-up works underway

Council's emergency response staff were deployed to several sites on Saturday morning, including Wongawilli, to support SES and NSW Police's response to flash flooding events. At Wongawilli Road they worked to divert flooding away from the roadway and from property.

Council maintenance staff are now working on-site to clean up the sediment and rock that was left behind by the flood water.

This week a second construction crew will be on-site. They'll support clean-up efforts and ongoing road works as well as undertake further preventative works to help reduce the impact of any further major storm events during construction works.

Our installation of the main stormwater drainage system including reinforced concrete pipes and pre cast concrete pits is well underway. However with wet weather set to continue this week, our crew may work off-site at times, as it’s never safe to dig or work in trenches when rain is on the way. We’ll continue with the stormwater installation when it’s safe. In the coming days residents will also see deliveries of road materials in preparation for upcoming road pavement works.

In addition to stormwater works, last week saw us install temporary school bus stops at Smiths Lane and Jersey Farm Road; finish line-marking the temporary secondary access lane near Shone Avenue; and complete night time inspection of Smiths Lane intersection to inform permanent improvement works.

Looking ahead to next week, we’ll have a second crew starting on site to fast track construction. The crews will work on completing the stormwater installation and widening the road pavement. This will lead into kerb and gutter installation and driveways for the southern side of Wongawilli Road.

Cartage of material into the Wongawilli subdivision has finished for now until about mid-November. A further 2 weeks of cartage may occur from then until the end of the year. The reduction of heavy vehicle movements through the village will improve conditions for residents, our workers and local traffic.

We’ll be undertaking night works this Thursday night 22 October to investigate raising the level of Sydney Water lids at the Smiths Lane and Wongawilli Road intersection. We’ll need to raise these lids to match the level of the new road pavement we’ll be constructing as part of the project. Works will be completed outside of peak traffic hours under traffic control. You may hear some construction noise however the investigations are not expected to take long.

We've been working hard to temporarily restore two-way access to Wongawilli this Friday 16 October 2020. We’ve heard from the community how important this is and we tasked Cadifern to construct these interim road pavement sections to make two-way access possible. We’ll need to revert to one-way traffic again towards the end of the year for a few days to install the remaining stormwater structures. The final road pavement will be built after this.
