Dog ownership and dog registrations have increased in the Wollongong area. We have been told by the community that off-leash parks are  something they want more of. Council wants to ensure that there are opportunities for the community  to enjoy  recreation  with their dogs.

We are asking the community to consider  three parks for dog off-leash spaces. The proposed sites are:

·Bellambi Oval, Bott Drive Bellambi

·JJ Kelly Park, Wollongong (Timed access)

·  Reed Park, Dapto

There is a wide range of equipment available for dog recreation areas. We are asking the community  to let us know what they would like us to consider  installing.

There are 49,729 microchipped dogs in  the local government area. There are many unregistered dogs too.

Council has 15 off-leash areas. These  areas include 5 parks and 10 beaches where dogs can be off-leash at all times. 

·Proud Park, Helensburgh

·Figtree Oval, Figtree

·Riley Park, Unanderra

·King George V Park, Port Kembla

·Eleebana Reserve, Koonawarra

We have ten Orange zones and ten Green zones Orange - On-leash and limited hours - Bulli, Coalcliff, Corrimal, Fairy Meadow, Fisherman’s, Scarborough, Thirroul, Towradgi, Woonona.

Green - Off-leash and 24 hours - Coniston, East Corrimal, Little Austinmer, McCauley’s, MM, Perkins beach, Puckey’s, Sandon Point, Sharkey’s,

Orange and Green - Bellambi, Stanwell Park.

The orange zone means that dogs are prohibited on that beach, unless they are on a lead before 9am and after 4pm (Winter) and 6pm (Summer).

You can go to Council’s website which will give you a list of all  parks and beaches where dogs are allowed and the regulations  in place for each site.

Council resolved to review this policy every 3 years as part of its scheduled review cycle. It’s time to  look at it again to ensure that it is relevant to Council and the community.

The way to provide your feedback  is to  complete  the survey available on Council's website. The survey is also available in Council libraries and at some  veterinary surgeries and outlets that provide for dogs.

Feedback received from the community will be reported to Council for their consideration. All comments received will be considered and used to inform the Policy review,  Off-leash park selection and provision of future dog activity equipment.
