Consultation has concluded

As part of Council’s commitment to improving road safety and transport connectivity, we're planning to make improvements around Corrimal Train Station so that your journey is a safer one.

About the project

We're working with Transport for NSW to improve two locations around Corrimal Train Station. This project is part of Transport for NSWs ‘Transport Integration and Placemaking’ program to improve access around selected train stations across our city. We want you involved throughout our planning so that these proposed changes will suit your needs and improve your experience at Corrimal Station.

Murray Road is a key connection for people travelling from Corrimal Train Station to school, the shops, and the beach. We’ve identified a number of improvements we can make along Murray Road, which we are sharing with you. We also have plans for further improvements on Railway Street, Corrimal. Together, these projects will support access to Corrimal Train Station to ensure your journey to catch the train is a safer one.

Murray Road - What are we proposing?

Murray Road is a key east-west connection through East Corrimal to many attractions along the way to the coastal shared path. The draft concept design includes

  • A 950m shared path along Murray Road to link Corrimal Train Station to the existing coastal shared path.
  • Five new raised pedestrian priority crossings.

Railway Street - What are we proposing?

Railway Street is a local, yet busy road running in an east-west direction north of Corrimal Station. There are currently no pedestrian crossings at Railway Street near Corrimal Station. The draft concept design includes:

  • Installing a refuge island on Railway Street, close to Ruddock Street.
  • Add supporting kerb ramps, signage and line marking.

Where is this project up to?

We began consultation with the community from August - September 2024 to welcome feedback on our proposed changes to Corrimal Train Station, including Murray Road and Railway Street. This consultation has now concluded.

Our Transport Team is now working through all that was heard throughout this project. You can still view the draft concept designs for this project and see what we have planned:

How will community feedback be used and what are the next steps?

In the first phase, we were asking for your feedback on our draft concept designs. We’re interested to hear your local knowledge and ideas.

In the second phase, we will check back in with the community to finalise the detailed designs and take any last comments before we start construction.

Construction is planned for 2025/2026 - 2026/2027 financial years as listed in our Infrastructure Delivery Program(External link).

    About the Project

The community was being asked to share their thoughts on a proposed pedestrian island being installed in Railway Street, Corrimal.

There were 26 submissions made using the survey (online and hard copy) in relation to the proposed works along Railway Street, Corrimal. Four submissions were made via email, on this project.

    Results

Question 1: Do you agree that the installation of a pedestrian refuge will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in Railway Street and lead to better access of the station?

Question 2: What do you think about the proposed location of a pedestrian refuge island on Railway Street?

Question 3: Would you consider changing your travel habits in the future to include more walking, cycling and/or public transport after seeing these proposed changes near Corrimal Train Station?

Question 3.1: As you’ve said ‘no’, tell us why:

The feedback in response to the question about changing travel habits around Railway Street highlights several key points:

    • many already incorporate walking and cycling into their daily routines
    • content with current reliance on cars
    • the area's infrastructure for safe cycling will remain unsuitable despite the proposed changes
    • local transport planning should take a broader view, suggesting larger-scale projects like a cycleway network to better integrate surrounding areas.
    • frustration with the current planning, questioning why money is being spent on the proposed changes when there is already a plan for an overpass on Railway Street.
    • current efforts are misaligned with the area’s actual needs, especially with future developments.

Question 4: If you have feedback on these proposed changes, please share it here

The feedback on introducing a pedestrian refuge island to Railway Street, Corrimal, reveals feedback that can be summarised under the following key themes:

    • Safety concerns and pedestrian needs
    • Calls for expanded infrastructure
    • Traffic flow and future growth
    • Cycling and active transport infrastructure

If you would like to understand the feedback in more detail, you can read the complete Engagement Report(External link) for this, and the 6 other train stations included in this project.

    Next Steps

Council will now consider all the feedback provided by the community regarding the proposed changes to Railway Street, Corrimal.

All feedback is important and is one factor in the decision-making process for Council. The graphic below shows some of the factors we consider in our decision making:

This project will have another phase of consultation where the community can participate in. the second phase, we will check back in with the community to finalise the detailed designs and take any last comments before we start construction.

All previous participants and the broader community will be notified via the Our Wollongong website.

    About the Project

The improvements proposed for Murray Road were the largest and most significant across all 12 projects engaged on as part of the Transport Integration and Placemaking Project. The plans proposed:

    • A 950m shared path along Murray Road to link Corrimal Train Station to the existing coastal shared path in the east.
    • Five new raised pedestrian priority crossings
    1. Northern side of Murray Road for east-west crossing of Duff Parade (intersection)
    2. Northern side of Murray Road for east-west crossing of Pioneer Road (roundabout
    3. Northern side of Murray Road for east-west crossing of Carroll Road (intersection)
    4. Mid-block between Carrol Road and Cawley Street for north-south crossing of Murray Road (near shops)
    5. Southern side of Murray Road for east-west crossing of Parker Road (intersection)

There were 69 submissions made using the survey (online and hard copy) in relation to the proposed works along Murray Road, East Corrimal.

    Results

Question 1: Do you agree that this plan will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists along Murray Road and lead to better access of the station?

Question 2: What do you think about the proposed 950m Shared Path on Murray Road?

Question 3: We want to know if the locations for the proposed new raised pedestrian crossings are best for our community. Rate them:

Question 4: Would you consider changing your travel habits in the future to include more walking, cycling and/or public transport after seeing these proposed changes along Murray Road?

Question 4.1: As you’ve said ‘no’, tell us why:

The feedback in response to the question about changing travel habits along Murray Road highlights several key points:

    • already walk or cycle in the area
    • currently satisfied with the current infrastructure or do not see a need for further improvements.
    • concerns about the safety of shared pathways, particularly regarding interactions between cyclists and pedestrians
    • job requires the use of a car during the day, making public transport or cycling impractical
    • the proposed upgrades are addressing lower-priority issues - suggestions for more urgent improvements include better pedestrian crossings, safety upgrades for school students, and the addition of no-parking signs near shops to address visibility issues.

Question 5: If you have feedback on these proposed changes, including the Shared Path and proposed locations of the raised pedestrian crossings, please share it here:

The feedback on the proposed shared pathway and raised pedestrian crossings along Murray Road in East Corrimal has been summarised under the following themes:

    • Safety and traffic concerns
    • Shared pathway issues
    • Parking and road narrowness
    • Additional infrastructure suggestions
    • Cycling infrastructure needs
    • Suggestions for alternative routes and design adjustments
    • Feedback on other matters related to Murray Road
    • General support for active transport and safety improvements
