Consultation has concluded

We’re continuing on our promise to deliver improvements around Corrimal Train Station and East Corrimal Shops so that your journey is a safer one. This project is funded by Transport for NSWs and their ‘Transport Integration and Placemaking’ program to improve access around selected train stations across our city.

In 2024, we asked for feedback on our draft concept designs for proposed improvements along Murray Road and Railway Street, Corrimal.

In early 2026, we checked back in with the community, sharing the detailed design and doing a final check before we moved to construction.

Head to our News Feed to follow the stages of the project, including updates on when the construction works are schedule to start.

    Outcome of community engagement

Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback on the detailed designs.

The project will make it safer and easier for people to walk, ride, and move around the area. It will connect important places like Corrimal Station, local schools, shops, the coastal path, and the Foreshore. The project includes a continuous shared path and better pedestrian crossings, helping to slow traffic and create a safer, more comfortable street for everyone in the community.

    What we heard

We asked for feedback on the detailed design on this project, to make sure we got it right and whether we needed to make any final changes before we move to construction.

The feedback we received revealed some key themes for us to consider. They were:

    • Traffic and congestion - what impact the proposed crossings might have in increasing delays.
    • Speed changes - the necessity of the speed zone reducing to 40km/h.
    • Parking - The high use of the parking at East Corrimal shops and concerns about losing spaces.
    • Safety - The narrowness of Murray Road and risk to windows and pedestrians, and interactions between shared path users and cars.
    • Environment – Negative impact of losing trees.

You can find more information in the complete Engagement Report.

    What we’re changing

Every piece of feedback was read through in detail. From the feedback, we have made some changes to the design which includes:

    • To minimise parking loss, whilst some on-street parking will be removed, the kerb buildouts at some crossings have been redesigned to mean we don’t lose as many spaces.

    • To help widen traffic lanes, reduce mirror strikes, and improve access and safety, we’re shifting the parking spaces on the south side of Murray Road outside East Corrimal Shops to be on the north side of the road instead.

    • To reduce risks of negative interactions between cars and pedestrians, ‘give way’ line markings will be installed across every driveway along the shared path. These markings show that people using the shared path have priority and remind drivers to slow down, stop if needed, and check carefully before exiting or entering driveways.

    • To replace the trees we’re removing, the design now includes significant tree planting in Phil Adams Park.

    What we’re looking to deliver

Some things that will remain in the design now before we move to construction are:

    • All the locations of the proposed crossings will remain the same, as well as the style of the crossing. They align with school walking routes and will help increase safety for both pedestrians, but also drivers.

    • The shared path will remain in the design and have a 2.5m width to support multiple users. Bike riders must give way to pedestrians on shared paths and adjust their speed to suit the environment.

    • The 40km/h speed limit will go ahead. Lower speeds - supported by speed cushions and raised crossings- greatly reduce pedestrian crash risk and create safer conditions around schools and local shops.

    • All four refuge crossings at the roundabout at Murray Road and Pioneer Road will be upgraded for now, as a complete upgrade of the intersection is planned in the future.

    What happens next?

The revised plans were approved by Council’s Wollongong Local Transport Forum on 10 March 2026. Construction is planned to start in the coming months and is anticipated to take approximately 9 months - weather pending.

We’ll be in touch with a letter to residents nearby when it gets closer to works starting. During construction you will see a construction work crew, their vehicles and equipment in the area. The work crew will aim to minimise disruption, however there may be some traffic control requirements at times. We’ll contact you before we start to let you know what dates we’ll be onsite.

Murray Road - What are we proposing?

Murray Road is a key east-west connection through East Corrimal to many attractions along the way to the coastal shared path. The draft concept design includes:

    • A 950m shared path along Murray Road to link Corrimal Train Station to the existing coastal shared path.
    • Five new raised pedestrian priority crossings.

Railway Street - What are we proposing?

Railway Street is a local, yet busy road running in an east-west direction north of Corrimal Station. There are currently no pedestrian crossings at Railway Street near Corrimal Station. The draft concept design includes:

    • Installing a refuge island on Railway Street, close to Ruddock Street.
    • Add supporting kerb ramps, signage and line marking.

You can share your thoughts by:

    • Complete the hard-copy survey on each location.
