Wollongong City Council is seeking feedback on how to house our growing population through the exhibition of the draft Housing and Affordable Housing Options Paper.

The Options Paper provides options and ideas to help Council, State government agencies, developers and homeowners house our growing population and create housing that is affordable. Affordable housing considers the needs of various sectors in the community such as the homeless, social housing, students, seniors, people on very low to medium incomes, and people with disability.

As our city’s population grows and the number of people aged 60 years and above continues to climb, the city will require housing that is affordable and caters for people who are living alone or with a partner. Currently the city has about 216,071 people who live in more than 80,000 dwellings. The State Government projects that the Wollongong population will grow by about 45,700 people by 2036, and we will need a further 23,800 dwellings. Also, the number of people aged 70 and over will increase to 31,845 by 2026.

Council’s current Housing Strategy was prepared in 2006 and used to inform the preparation of the Wollongong Local Environment Plan (LEP) 2009.

Council has been preparing a new Housing Strategy in three stages:

  • Stage 1 – In 2017 Council released the Housing Our Community discussion paper and Residential Density Study
  • Stage 2 – Council is now seeking community input into the draft Housing and Affordable Housing Options Paper
  • Stage 3 – preparation of a draft Housing Strategy and draft changes to planning controls (LEP and Development Control Plan (DCP)). The draft Strategy and draft documents will also be exhibited for community input.

We are now at Stage 2 and are seeking your feedback on the draft Housing and Affordable Housing Options Paper. We provided three main ways for your to provide feedback.

Firstly, there's a survey that covers the major recommendations in the Options Paper.

Secondly, there's an ideas page where you can share your ideas on increasing the diversity of housing stock, planning for future housing growth, increasing the supply of affordable rental housing and a vision for housing in Wollongong. Your ideas will be public and other community members can support your ideas, build on them or suggest alternatives.
