Consultation has concluded

We have prepared a draft Planning Proposal to identify the former Corrimal Coke Works site as a heritage item of local significance. The proposal involves amendments to the Wollongong Local Environment Plan 2009 and will enable conservation of the site to be considered as part of any development proposal.

We are now presenting the draft Planning Proposal for exhibition and asking the community to provide comment.

On 8 May 2019 a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) was issued by a private certifier to the developer of the site, for demolition of the majority of structures on the site. On 20 May 2019 Council placed an Interim Heritage Order (IHO) under the NSW Heritage Act 1977 over the site to provide temporary protection to structures earmarked for demolition. The IHO was issued by staff under delegation to allow time to assess the heritage significance of the site and progress a heritage listing as per the 2018 Council resolution. On 28 October 2019 Council resolved to extend the IHO a further six months while the Planning Proposal process progressed.

The Planning Proposal on public exhibition will make the following amendments to the Wollongong Local Environmental Plan 2009:

  • Add the former Corrimal Coke Works site to Schedule 5 of the Wollongong Local Environmental Plan 2009
  • Add the former Corrimal Coke Works site to the Wollongong Local Environmental Plan 2009 Heritage Map, showing heritage items within the area.

The Heritage Assessment prepared by Biosis (2017) suggested potential State Heritage significance and Council resolved to seek advice from the NSW Heritage Council in relation to the potential for the site to be listed on the State Heritage Register. Council’s Heritage staff have prepared a State Heritage Register nomination, and the NSW Heritage Council is assessing the nomination.

Please note that the Heritage listing is being progressed separately to the Planning Proposal being considered for the rezoning of the site to allow residential development. There are still a number of studies to be completed in support of the proposal to rezone the site, prior to the proposal being reported back to Council for endorsement to place on public exhibition. Council will notify separately any future public exhibition for the Planning Proposal to rezone the site to permit residential development.

The exhibition period for this draft Planning Proposal relating to a heritage listing amendment is 9 March to 8 April 2020. Copies of the suite of documents can be viewed to the right of this page or at:

  • All Wollongong City libraries during library hours;
  • Council’s Customer Service Centre, Ground Floor Administration Building, 41 Burelli Street Wollongong on weekdays between 9am and 5pm;
