Consultation has concluded.

We're excited the next stage of the Grand Pacific Walk is ready to be shared with our Coledale community.

The Grand Pacific Walk is all about creating a safe, scenic route for walkers and cyclists along the stunning 60km stretch of Wollongong’s coastline, from the Royal National Park in the north all the way down to Lake Illawarra in the south.

This next section of the project is about creating connections from Austinmer to Coledale. These connections make our shared pathways safer and more accessible for our community. This project will start from the northern end of Sharky Beach car park and run south to Headland Avenue - about 1km in length. The project plans include:

  • Extending and improving shared paths links
  • Upgrading and formalising the Sharky Beach car park
  • Reinstating the bus shelter
  • Creating a new path through the eastern side of Sharky Beach car park
  • Wayfinding signage
  • Improved amenities.

We want to find out from our community if there is anything we need to consider with the current plans before we start construction.

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts during this engagement.

Council invited the community to provide feedback on the next stage of the Grand Pacific Walk – Coledale. This section of the project focuses on upgrades to Sharky Beach Carpark, continuation of the shared path network and improvements to safe pedestrian and cycling connections. The purpose of engagement was to understand what residents, visitors to the area and shared path users want Council to consider in the proposed plans before construction takes place.

    Engagement Participation Numbers

Between 2 February and 1 March 2026, we had:

    Engagement participation

    723 Visits to the website
    Survey icon 45 Surveys completed

    14 Emails received
two people talking icon 40 Face-to-face conversations

A summary of themes and ideas heard through the engagement are included below:

    • There is strong support for the upgraded path and continuation of the shared path network.
    • Many people welcomed improvements that make it safer and easier to walk or cycle, especially along routes that are currently unsafe or difficult to use.
    • The community highly values the local character and aesthetic of Sharky Beach and surrounds and would like to see it maintained.
    • Safety and safe access are a priority for many who provided feedback, with suggestions to ensure all visitors and users (residents, pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles) can move safely through the area.

    Sharky Beach car park

    • Many people support the formalisation of Sharky Beach car park and welcome safer, more accessible and equitable parking.
    • There were concerns raised over the potential loss of parking spaces, and that formalising will change the existing character of the area.
    • Concerns were raised around consolidation to a single entry and exit point at the Park St intersection. People felt that due to very high traffic, pedestrian and cyclist use and other factors (e.g. no passing lane or slip lane, limited visibility, fast moving traffic due to gradient) that it would be less safe if all entry and exit traffic was redirected through here. Several alternate suggestions were made such as having a designated entry and exit point, moving the entrance further north or different forms of traffic management.

    Shared Path

    • There was strong support for the continuation of the shared path that would increase safety for bike riders and pedestrians.
    • Safety was identified as a priority for everyone, some raising the potential conflict of users as a concern.
    • Some feedback indicated that shared paths were not safe and riders and pedestrians should be separated wherever possible.
    • There were mixed views on positioning of the path, width and alignment.
    • There were suggestions of increasing community education and awareness about shared paths and safe use.

    Other

    • Concerns were raised about closing the Southern exit point of the smaller car park on Lawrence Hargrave Drive as part of its formalisation. Residents indicated the car park currently provides a safe turning point and would like to see that maintained.
    • People want to see materials used that are sympathetic to the existing space such as timber fences and railings instead of metal.
    • Concerns were raised about potential ‘visual clutter’ in the area such as excessive signage, metal or steel treatments.
    • Safe crossing points are a priority for people, with suggestions received on maintaining and improving these.
    • The importance of environmental protections and consideration including dune protection, native tree planting, weed control and maintenance, has been highlighted.
    • The community is keen to see improved amenities and enjoyment for people who frequent the space such as green space, shade, seating and bins.
    • Several ideas and suggestions were made to improve the broader area (outside of the scope of proposed plans).

    Next steps

    • All feedback heard from the community will now be considered by the project team.
    • Feedback is important and is one factor of the decision-making process for Council. There are a whole range of things that are important in how we make a decision. The graphic shows some of the factors we consider in our decision making:
