Welcome back!

Thank you for participating in the West Dapto suburb naming project working group! We really appreciate the time you are taking to be part of this project - and to our new members, a warm welcome.

Acknowledgement of Country

We wish to pay respects to the Country on which we are meeting, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and pay our respects to members of our Aboriginal community who are supporting this project.

Purpose of this group

As you know, we have asked the community to suggest names for our new West Dapto suburbs. For Suburb A we now have a list of 73 additional names, which we need to review and research. We need to develop a shortlist of names that meet the Geographical Names Board of NSW (GNB) criteria, and are also significant and meaningful to West Dapto.

We will develop a shortlist of names to provide to the GNB. We need to provide evidence about why names were or weren't included in the shortlist. That's where we need your help - we need you to review the names and provide research about the history and significance of that name to help us develop the shortlist.

What do I need to do?

  1. Explore this website as you will need many of the resources on the right to help you
  2. Go to the discussion forum to say hello, introduce yourself and let everyone know which organisation or group you are representing. We would especially like our new members to introduce themselves.
  3. Start researching! Use the research template to organise your research. Fill it out from the research you have found. If there is anything you are unsure about, put it on there.
  4. Upload your research template into the 'Upload Name research templates here' tab. We will all be able to see each other's research templates. Have a look at everyone else's to help with our discussion.
  5. We will talk through the discussion forum (plus video call or phone call) to discuss each suggested name and if it belongs on the shortlist or not.
  6. We will agree our non-Aboriginal names shortlist following completion of research.
  7. The project team of David, Emma, Nina and Diane are here to support you through this process. The discussion forum below is a place for back and forth conversation and the project team will be part of these conversations.
