Wilson Street Wollongong Shared Zone
Consultation has concluded
As part of our commitment to improve pedestrian safety, we are proposing a new Shared Zone in Wilson Street, Wollongong.
The purpose of a Shared Zone is to make a road space safe for both vehicles and pedestrians. The local community asked us to improve pedestrian safety in and around Wilson Street. The idea of Shared Zone was to reduce the speed of vehicles while providing pedestrian access and safety. In partnership with Transport NSW, we analysed traffic behaviours in Wilson Street and have designed a solution through the proposal of a Shared Zone.
Where are the changes being made?
The changes will run the entirety of Wilson Street, Wollongong.

What is being proposed?
The Shared Zone we are planning to deliver will prioritise the safety of pedestrians in Wilson Street. The key elements will include:
- Set 10kmph speed zone throughout Wilson Street
- Raised continuous footpath (Campbell Street / Wilson Street intersection)
- Introduction of 4 speed humps
- Signage indicating 10kmph speed zone and 'Give Way to Pedestrians'
- Alternate parking to be both on the left and right side of the road
- Asphalt surface treatment to road in a design chosen by the community
You can view the concept plans here.

This is what we heard from the community:
About the Project
From 26 September to 17 October 2024, a community engagement project was conducted for the proposed Wilson Street Shared Zone, prompted by previous concerns over pedestrian safety and speeding issues.
The project, funded by Transport for NSW, aimed to introduce a Shared Zone on Wilson Street. However, initial feedback from the first engagement phase in May 2024 revealed community interest in an alternative footpath solution. Since funding for a footpath did not meet the grant’s criteria, the current engagement sought residents' preferences on progressing with the Shared Zone or waiting for potential future footpath funding.
Communication Methods and Participation
Stakeholders for this project included residents in the surrounding areas of Wilson Street, businesses, community groups, schools, and Transport for NSW. They were all invited to engage on this project.
There were 99 responses to the question posed to the community, including 83 surveys, 10 online poll responses, 6 emails. One petition with 222 signatures was also received.
Engagement Outcome:

This was a combined total from the returned surveys, online quick poll responses and sentiment gathered from the 6 emails received. The petition was given separately to the project’s team for their consideration.
You can read the full Engagement Report - Wilson Street Shared Zone Additional Engagement - November 2024.
Next Steps
Council will now consider the feedback provided by the community regarding the Shared Zone proposal for Wilson Street, Wollongong. All feedback is important and is one factor in the decision-making process for Council.

Engagement has now concluded for this project.

Update on the proposed Shared Zone for Wilson Street
Share Update on the proposed Shared Zone for Wilson Street on Facebook Share Update on the proposed Shared Zone for Wilson Street on Twitter Share Update on the proposed Shared Zone for Wilson Street on Linkedin Email Update on the proposed Shared Zone for Wilson Street link
In early May, we went to the community to propose a Shared Zone in Wilson Street. We were offered grant funding for the Shared Zone through Transport for NSW, in response to community concerns over speeding and risks to pedestrian safety.
During the engagement period from 2 May – 22 May, we heard support for the Shared Zone, but also residents enquiring why a footpath was not being proposed, as for some this was a preferred option.
We asked Transport for NSW if the funds could be allocated to a footpath instead, however it didn’t meet the grant funding criteria, so the request was declined. Council does not have any budget in the short term to deliver a footpath in Wilson Street.
The community are now being asked their preference of the two options:
- Proceed to design the Shared Zone and seek construction funding from Transport for NSW to have it be delivered in the short term
- Not to proceed with the Shared Zone and wait until funding is secured for a footpath in the longer term?
Additional information about the footpath
This project would need to be added to Council’s Infrastructure Delivery Program, which is a program that commits budget for infrastructure over the next four years. All infrastructure projects are assessed through a range of criteria and given a priority rating. There is no guarantee this project would be completed within the next 6-10 years.

- Concept sketch of a footpath in Wilson Street
- Frequently Asked Questions regarding this project sharing more detail on the project and why we are asking community their preference for Wilson Street.
- Online quick poll for you to outline your preference for a Shared Zone or a footpath

You can elect to participate in a future workshop to inform the design of the Shared Zone by completing the form and sharing your details. Please note that if the footpath is the preferred option for Wilson Street, no workshop will take place.
