What is planned?

Reserve Street and Gilmore Street New Shared Path

The proposed West Wollongong plan is a 2.5m wide shared user path (for walkers and riders) which will begin on the corner of Parsons Street, then continue from the corner of Robsons Road and Reserve Street. The path will run along the south side of Reserve Street, then turn north on the western side of Gilmore Street. A concrete blister crossing will be installed, and the shared path will continue along the eastern side of Gilmore Street and finally connect to the newly built Fairy Creek shared path.

Bourke Street and Virginia Street New Shared Path

The proposed Wollongong plan is a 2.5m wide shared user path (for walkers and riders) which will begin on the corner Station Street and Princes Highway, continue to Bourke Street on the west side, then run up the southern side of Bourke Street to the corner of Kembla Street. From there it will switch to the north side of Bourke Street until to the corner of Cliff Road.

Example of a shared path and kerb ramp

Some parts of the path have already been established and we will maintain these paths where possible.

The shared path will also run along the western side of Virginia Street, before one leg will wrap onto Squires Way and continue north to an upgraded crossing refuge to arrive at the northern entrance of Stuart Park and the Grand Pacific Walk.

A refuge island at the northern end of Virginia Street will be installed and this shared path leg will continue along the eastern side of Virginia Street, wrapping onto Squires Way and leading to another refuge crossing to arrive at the middle Stuart Park entrance and meet the shared path towards the Blue Mile.

Example of a pedestrian refuge crossing

We will also be painting linemarking on existing shared paths on Station Street, Princes Highway and Bourke Street (out the front of the Novotel).

    Will trees be removed?

    Reserve Street and Gilmore Street

Council will be removing seven (7) existing trees from outside 13 Gilmore Street and 1-3 Reserve Street to accommodate the shared path. Compensatory tree planting will be provided in Gilmore Park to offset any trees removed.

    Bourke Street and Virginia Street

Council will be removing four (4) trees along Bourke Street and one (1) tree on Virginia Street to accommodate the shared path. Compensatory tree planting will be provided in Stuart Park to offset any trees removed.

    Will parking be affected?

    Reserve Street and Gilmore Street

Council will install No Stopping signs near the new pedestrian refuge and concrete blister crossings to ensure the safety of pedestrians. This will remove four (4) parking spaces along Gilmore Street to establish the new crossing. Two (2) spaces will be removed to establish the new shared path on Reserve Street.

Virginia Street, George Hanley Drive and Squires Way

Council will install No Stopping signs near the new pedestrian refuge on Virginia Street to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. This will remove four (4) parking spaces on Virginia Street. To establish the new shared path connection on Squires Way and accommodate the two new crossings to ensure pedestrian and cyclist safety, approximately fifteen (15) car spaces will be removed along George Hanley Drive and Squires Way.

How will I be affected by the work?

During construction residents will see a construction work crew, their vehicles and equipment in the area. The work crew will aim to minimise disruption, however there may be some traffic control requirements at times. Access to and from the properties will be unaffected. Our construction crews will make contact before works start on site. Some driveways may be affected by the new shared path.

When will the work on the new shared paths commence?

Construction on Reserve Street, Gilmore Street and Virginia Street is intended to commence in the first quarter of 2024 and take approximately 14 weeks to complete.

Construction on Bourke Street is intended to commence in the 2024/2025 financial year.

What will happen with my feedback?

At the conclusion of the engagement period all feedback is included in a report provided to the project team for consideration.
