MacCabe Park Site 2

Consultation has concluded.

On 27 October 2025, Wollongong Council endorsed the preferred location for the construction of a new regional level skatepark facility for the Wollongong City Centre for public exhibition. We’re now seeking feedback on an identified section of MacCabe Park as the preferred location.

We’ve been planning to build a regional level skate park in the city to add to our existing network of skateparks. A City Centre skatepark will provide increased community recreation opportunities for our existing skate community and meet future demands for the increasingly popular sport.

We’ve worked with renowned skatepark consultant Convic over the last couple of years to understand what the skate community want in a new facility, and to conduct site assessments on some potential locations.

The preferred site in MacCabe Park has been proposed based on the following key considerations:

  • The site has good natural surveillance along Church Street
  • It is sufficient distance from homes
  • It allows and maintains space for other activities and events
  • It maintains pedestrian movements through the park

What we’ve heard about this site

In addition to Convic’s Site Selection Report, the community have previously shared thoughts and suggestions on MacCabe Park including through engagement on the following projects: Let’s Talk Skateparks; Safer Cities Her Way and Creating Safer Communities. Some of what we’ve previously heard includes:

  • MacCabe Park is in a prime city location which is currently under-utilised
  • The community would like to see more events and activity there
  • The park is well connected to transport and is close to amenities, and shops
  • Having more uses for the park could help improve safety and visibility, and make the space more welcoming and vibrant

At the Council meeting on 15 December 2025, Council resolved:

    1. That Council adopt the following sites as the preferred skate park locations:
      • a) MacCabe Park, Wollongong (Site 2) as the Wollongong City Centre Skate Park
      • b) WF Jackson Park, Thirroul as the Northern Suburbs Skate Park
    2. That Council notes the submissions received, and thanks all members of the community that participated in the public exhibition and engagement for both skate park sites.

As you may know, we are working with Convic to help design the skatepark in the Wollongong City Centre. Alongside a review of the community feedback that took place last year that many of you participated in, Convic are also undertaking site analysis for the new park considering the constraints and opportunities of several sites within the city centre area.

Before the end of the year, we’ll share with you the proposed location, a draft design and seek further feedback on the plans for the City Centre skatepark.

We are dedicated to planning and delivering new skate parks in the City Centre. To ensure these projects meet community needs and expectations, as you may know Council has been working with renowned designers Convic to conduct a detailed site analysis for the new parks. This analysis considers community engagement, site constraints, and future opportunities and land uses.

Convic’s report is currently under review and refinement. Once finalised, it will guide the development of the skate parks. Projects like this take time to get right. We want a facility that is going to be enjoyed by our community now, and also into the future.

We continue our commitment to making these new skate parks accessible and inclusive, ensuring they meet the needs of women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. The planning process will also look at aiming to improve public spaces and enhance the overall community experience.

Council is committed to delivering these skate facilities and they’re in our Draft Delivery and Operational Plan. The Draft Delivery and Operational Plans currently propose that the City Centre skatepark be constructed between 2025 – 2027. The opportunity to leave your feedback on these draft plans wraps up on 7 May 2025. The adoption of the Draft Delivery and Operational Plan will happen in the coming months.

There is a lot is happening behind the scenes for Wollongong City Centre Skatepark at the moment. We are working closely with CONVIC to go through all the feedback we heard between March – June this year. CONVIC looked at sites with us during the engagement period and they’re now working with us to consider what the community wanted, how it would work in the site and how that works with our budget.

We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop with further updates in the coming months.

Over 130 people completed the online pre-design survey for the new skatepark in Wollongong City Centre. Around 40 people attended the in-person workshops with CONVIC at our Wollongong Youth Centre back in April. The online survey told us the preferred style of skatepark in Wollongong City Centre was a ‘Street and Plaza’ style. This was also heard at the workshop:

The next time we go out to community will again be with CONVIC and will have roughly a 50 percent completed skate design. In-person and online engagement opportunities will happen again, including priority for targeted female and gender diverse engagement. We will let you know when we are planning to do our next engagement activities on the Draft Concept Design for Wollongong City Centre.
