Pilot Cycling Routes

Consultation has concluded

As part of our commitment to providing ways for the community to access sustainable, affordable and accessible transport, we’re working on a plan for pilot cycling routes. These will enable safer cycling in Wollongong City Centre, Port Kembla, Towradgi and Thirroul.

We’ve had many conversations about cycling with the community in recent years. You told us that you wanted:

  • a sustainable and liveable city with a range of transport options
  • dedicated cycling routes, separated from high numbers of pedestrians and cars
  • new bike paths or lanes that connect to existing cycling routes, our town centres and Wollongong City Centre
  • easier ways to use a bicycle along with other types of transport
  • education, signs and line marking to encourage safer use of our shared paths and roads

This project will deliver on your feedback by installing a series of cycling routes that:

  • rearrange road space to provide cycling routes that are separated from vehicles
  • slow vehicles so that drivers and cyclists can safely share the road
  • transform wide footpaths to shared paths
  • support businesses, visitors and tourism

Construction is expected to begin in October 2020 and be completed for the summer holidays.

This project is funded by Transport for NSW Fast Tracked Roadside Public Spaces Program, NSW Government’s 'Streets as Shared Spaces' and Wollongong City Council.

We want to hear from people who may be impacted by these changes with your ideas about how we could reduce those impacts. We’ll share any feedback about the proposed Shuttle Bus route changes with Transport for NSW, so they can consider it as part of their planning for this project.

An evaluation of all routes will occur throughout the pilot until 2022 to see if any changes are required. This will also inform how we can improve and build new ones in the future. Everyone who provides feedback now will be contacted again as part of this.

  • Key dates
  • Document Library with detailed maps (PDF versions) of where the pilot cycling routes will be located
  • Frequently Asked Questions - information about changes to traffic conditions, bin collection and removal of parking. This affects residents and landowners on Smith, Kembla and Harbour streets. There are also some proposed changes that Transport for NSW will make to the route of the Gong Shuttle Bus (55A/55C).
